Art of Writing receives Reimagining Higher Education Grant to expand Writing Fellows program

Art of Writing was recently awarded a $125,000 Reimagining Higher Education (RHE) Grant to expand its established Writing Fellows program into social science and STEM courses across campus.

The RHE grant funds innovative and transformative projects that reimagine how UC Berkeley can continue to provide an excellent education in light of technological, societal, and funding changes.

Writing Fellows serve as embedded tutors in undergraduate courses. They provide students with discipline-specific support through a combination of in-class writing workshops and office hours. They are conversant with the course content and receive training in composition pedagogy from Art of Writing to address the types of issues encountered by writers in the discipline.

Art of Writing’s RHE grant will support expanding the Writing Fellows beyond the humanities. The project will focus on cultivating the craft of writing and the teaching of writing in STEM and social science gateway courses and lower- and upper-division elective lecture courses.

Embedding Writing Fellows into these classes is an innovative, scalable, and cost-effective way for faculty to teach discipline-specific writing and prepare students to communicate in their fields.
